St. Martins delves into a darkly delicious fairytale for Autumn Winter 09

One of Denmark's finest exports, St. Martins casts a spell this Autumn Winter, as it conjures up the dark side of the fairytale. Inspired by all things that go bump in the night, St. Martins explored native folk tales and the fables of the Brothers Grimm to create a modern and wearable collection with subtle and intricate gothic undertones displayed in a luxurious array of tweeds, cottons, wools and silks.

Colours this season are in keeping with the magically macabre theme and appear in mainly muted tones, with purple being the main focus. The regal hue appears in a variety of guises from subdued to eye catching. Petrol blues and warm greens infuse to pepper pieces, as fleshy pinks and bright reds create drama.

St. Martins have conjured some truly marvellous prints this season. Gloomy forests work as backdrops to stars, butterflies and flowers. Rich tweeds, geometric prints and paisley patterns further add to the magical theme.

Shapes for Autumn Winter are in perfect keeping with the collections theme. Dresses appear in a keleidicope of fits, from cowl kneck knits to smocks and dresses with wraps to cinch the waist in. Structured jackets appear fitted to the body and fan out at the waist and skirts are given extra oomph with St. Martins classic tulle underskirt.

In keeping with St. Martins new found interest in the macabre, key items for Autumn Winter include the gorgeous black Orient dress. Resembling a sorceress's gown, the dress is banded by a strip of black satin at the waist which kicks out in to a gathered and draped, knee length skirt. The Special dress is framed in black with Tulle panelling on the shoulders, the warm pink background works as a fascinating contrast to stencilling of a barren forest. The pixie-like forest green Atlanta coat is also deserving of a mention. Rich in detail, it features panelling of tweed which sweeps from the under-arms to the collar and has kicks out into pleats from the waist-synching belt.
